Teaching Approach & Experiential Learning

We strongly emphasize a project based approach ensuring continuous experience on real-life problem solving based on a sound theoretical background, English as a teaching language, state-of-the-art knowlegde in methodology and development, and access to high-performance computing resources. Our teaching faculty convey a strongly interdisciplinary method for solving problems, still focusing either more on the mathematical or the informatics aspect of the discipline. Students are continuously working with our prestigious research partners on a national and international level and are involved in projects from various application domains, fostering experiential "learning by doing". Our research partners are ETH Zurich, the Swiss Centre for Scientific Computing CSCS, the Jülich Supercomputer Centre, the EPFL in Lausanne, the Université de Genève and the Cardiocentro Ticino CCT, among others. We benefit from our close collaboration with the CSCS which hosts one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, ranking place 6 on the TOP 500 list 2013.

The successful combination of interdisciplinary teaching and experiential learning has earned ICS a lot of recognition from the industry for educating the professionals and scientists of tomorrow. The prolific partnerships that form during these close application oriented collaborations are often the basis for future entrepreneurial activities and employments for our alumni.

Faculty of the ICS

Our internationally renowned teaching faculty are active participants on Swiss and international research projects and networks and have made extensive contributions to the Computational Science research community. Our faculty hold numerous honorary degrees from world renowned universities and have published a variety of outstanding, award winning publications and are editors of major peer reviewed journals in Computational Science. Among our most recently awarded prizes and grants are the "Marcel Benoist Prize" of the Swiss federal Department of Home affairs as well as two prestigious ERC grants from the European Research Council.

Our faculty is also very dedicated to fostering education in Computational Science. The faculty's excellence at teaching and mentoring constantly earns us campus recognition. An exceptionally high professor to student ratio and open door policy both contribute to a close contact and a very personal, informal and thriving teaching environment with a collegial atmosphere. Visiting professors from renowned universities complement the top-quality teaching.
