Description

The Faculty of Informatics is pleased to announce a seminar given by Prof. Bastien Chopard

Computer modeling and simulation of natural phenomena

Speaker: Prof. Bastien Chopard

University of Geneva

Date: Tuesday, October 18, 2016

Place: USI Lugano Campus, room SI-013, Informatics building (Via G. Buffi 13)

Time: 13:30

Abstract: In this talk we consider different methodologies to model various complex systems on a computer, from natural science to engineering to socio-economical systems. The Cellular Automata (CA) approach, the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method and multi-agent systems will be presented at a theoretical level and in the context of various applications.

Biography: Bastien Chopard got a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Geneva, in 1988.  He then spend 2 years at MIT (USA) and 1 year at the supercomputing center in Juelich, Germany, as a postdoc. He is now full professor in the computer science department, at the University of Geneva, and member of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. His research interests are the modeling and simulation of complex systems, cellular automata, the lattice Boltzmann method, parallel computing, and multiscale applications. He wrote over 200 articles for international journals and conferences, and received many research grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation, FP6-FP7, H2020 European projects, private and industry sources, etc.
