Fast and scalable implicit low-order finite-element solvers for solid earth science simulations

Abstract:

Solid earth science, such as earthquake and crust deformation problems involve large problem sizes with complex geometry and heterogeneous material properties. Implicit low-order finite-element methods are suitable for such problems; however, it is not straightforward to attain performance on modern supercomputers due to heterogeneity of the problem. In this talk, we will talk about the algorithm design and implementation to improve performance of low-order finite-element methods on massively parallel supercomputer systems. We will also talk about recent progress in porting these high-performance CPU based codes to GPU based systems.  

Biography:

Tsuyoshi Ichimura is an associate professor at Earthquake Research Institute and Department of Civil Engineering, the University of Tokyo. After receiving his PhD in 2001 at The University of Tokyo, he joined Tohoku University and Tokyo Institute of Technology before moving to current affiliation. His current research interest is in development of high-performance algorithms on modern supercomputers. He is author of SC14 and SC15 Gordon Bell prize finalist papers on large-scale implicit unstructured finite-element earthquake simulations.
